Update from Sofia – 6/21/25

Hi, before my usual update, I offer a remark on prisoner solidarity.

Present political tensions have, in my opinion, worsened my circumstances here. Tariffs will be felt soon, with no expropriation possible for essential items like envelopes, coffee, food! Staff get bolder with their targeted harassment of me, and as you may-or-not know, I keep a squeaky clean record here to secure my stay at this “women’s” prison. Frankly, being sent to a men’s facility would spell rape or death, or a beating at best (unless I could secure gang protection… maybe?). All this rests on my heart due to the scapegoating of trans bodies by the white supremacist, settler-colonial regime operating in full throttle.

So what are you doing to help make a more just world possible?

I offer you as a means: organizing with me, writing me, having discourse or allowing me to lecture, making music with me, art, maybe just donating to help lessen the repression or offering to call me on the phone. Prison solidarity needn’t be a certain way, but I do ask you to engage in it, as part of your diverse tactics.

Otherwise, what is done to ameliorate the deleterious effects of the carceral system? Transgender (political) prisoners are doubly fucked by this system – what is done?

For those scared due to the surveillance of communication let us suppose engaging with a prisoner would compromise your opsec. In such an instance, I imagine such a person: working a normative job with no discussion of radical politics, no usage of social media to discuss any radical politics, using something like Tails if you use a computer at all, maybe a burner or no phone usage, a social life with no radical politics or, possibly, only engaging insofar as one is masked-and-unknown. Other considerations: finances (cash only? Stolen identity?), transportation (stolen car? Public transit paid for how?), physicality (are you of “average: height? Non-unique gait?), attire (uniquely dressed), etc. Are you getting a picture?

Such a person of unbounded opsec, one who moves through our world as a ghost on the wind, probably should refrain from contacting me (unless you have several addresses to anonymously receive mail, perhaps). Most people are in no such position: if you’re already hypersurveilled by your phone,T.V., fridge, and microwave, what’s the harm in reaching out?

I would hate for fear, of all things, to inhibit any acts of solidarity. How well do you really understand this system, the nitty-gritty and not the theoretical? How do we attain abolition without prisoners?

With that out: I’m scheduled for my electrolysis appointments, weekly, the final step prior my vaginoplasty. I get to take a weekly trip to OSP, where I get electrolysis done with their equipment (the men have it, we don’t). If you have homies there, tell ’em I’ll be slidin’ through every Wednesday.

Are ya’ll interested in more recipes of mine? My cooking has evolved. I’ve had women buy my plates, serious.

I’m in the crunch time of my McNair dissertation. I’ve written a short (5-ish pages) history of the Movement for Black Lives, and I’m now temporally situating the movement in relation to other fights for black freedom & direct action campaigns.

Last, I’m surmising Epistemic Justice theories and showing how the Movement for Black Lives experiences epistemic injustices, hermeneutical, testimonial, recognition-based, and more. I’m 10-pages in so far, with those pages all single-spaced; 6 sources so far. X~X

I’m planning for graduate school, still. U of O, U.F.W. My friends here are suggesting I try Harvard, as it has a PEP. I’m set on a Ph.D…

And last, still rapping with my friends equipment. Political rap. :)

Hope to hear from ya’ll – expect delays while I complete my dissertation, but do write!

Stay Dangerous,

Sofia

Addendum: been doing electrolysis for 4 weeks now. Got approved for my own keyboard. Send a letter to Harvard, asking about grad school; finished my undergrad thesis and I earn my BA in ’26 spring. Have bad asthma rn. =( Also, dyed my hair red-violet. ^_^
